The National Firearms Museum: Part of American Heritage.

Guns have been an integral part of modern history – this is a fact that is accepted by both advocates and opponents of firearms. They have been used in wars – both for aggression and defence, and have thus, indirectly, shaped the course of events that defined much of the last two or three centuries. As a person who is quite keen on guns (rookie gun lovers go over to gungods.net), I have always been interested in the way weapons were used throughout history and my quest for knowledge led me to the National Firearms Museum based in Fairfax, Virginia. This facility, spanning fifteen thousand feet, houses 3000 guns in a total of 85 exhibits, making it a must visit location for anyone who is even a little bit interested in firearms. Interestingly, these exhibits categorize and examine the weapons with regards to American history, which is fitting, since America is a country where guns are still extremely popular. Each of the galleries represent a particular slice of American history, ranging from Jamestown’s stockade fort to New England’s gun industry. There are life-sized imitations of various gun-related locations – I was particularly intrigued by the recreation of a Normandy town square that had been shelled during the Second World War. The firearms present in each of the exhibits all have tales of their own: how they were used for protection as well as for hunting by the early American colonists, the role they played in the American Revolution and independence struggle and the subsequent Civil War, and their use since in various historic events and settings. There are also stories about competition, hunting, manufacture, exploration and recreational activities related to weapons. Keep in mind though, that this museum sheds light on the weapons in a generally positive manner, so you may get a bit annoyed if you aren’t pro-weapons. A section that interested me in particular, and I’m sure will attract movie lovers as well, was ‘Hollywood Guns’ present in the William B. Ruger Gallery. This section had 120 real firearms on display that had been used, over much of the last century, in film and television. There was a revolver that had been used by John Wayne for the very first time on camera, as well as weapons used in Oscar winning movies such as the Barrett .50 cal. Sniper rifle featured in the recent ‘Hurt Locker’, and the silenced shotgun seen in ‘No Country for Old Men’. The trip I took to this museum also revealed an interesting story about Lewis and Clark, two explorers who charted America’s western frontiers in the early days of the nation. They carried with them a Girandoni repeating air rifle(see the picture to the right) which found its use during their expedition. I had heard about their exploits before but had no idea that an air rifle played a role in the exploration of America’s frontiers! This leads me to the conclusion that this museum isn’t in fact good just for gun ‘buffs’ like me – a visit to the National Firearms Museum would be an excellent history lesson for anyone!   ...

The Worst Water Quality In The World: The 5 Winning (losing) countries..

In this day and age of technological and industrial advancement there are still parts of the world without access to basic clean drinking water. Unclean drinking water in third world countries is leading to increasing cases of death and mental developmental problems as a result of poisoning, primarily due to lead. A study carried out by Water.org and Oxfam have shown that only 13% of the people in Afghanistan have access to clean drinking water. Closely followed is Ethiopia with only 14% access to potable drinking water. The lack of clean drinking water in Ethiopia led to a severe infant mortality rate with only 77/1100 live births in the year 2013. In Chad, the horn of Africa, millions of people do not have access to water. Women and children have to walk for an average of 6-9 hours to retrieve water from unprotected water sources. In countries like Cambodia and Haiti, only up to 30% of the population has clean drinking water. Deaths due to unclean water are a growing cause for concern and locals must implement certain steps in making sure water is free of contaminants. Yes, many of the residents of these countries have little options and little money when it comes to  basic necessities such as drinking water, but what can be done for them? Here are 5 solutions which should be implemented by governments, charities and local residents (where possible): Water Softener Systems – A water softener/filter can be installed which will soften hard water and filter out harsh chemicals. The only problem here is that a stable electricity source is needed for the system to operate. It’s advised that anyone looking to purchase a water softener system should read water softener reviews (such as the ones found here) as some systems are better than others. Boil Water – Purely filtered water may look clean but usually isn’t. Although it may be free of physical impurities, it might contain deadly microorganisms. Boiling the water will remove these contaminants in 99% of cases, so make sure you boil the water if you’re in a place that doesn’t have good water quality. Consider New Innovations – Make use of simple yet effective devices to rid the water of microorganisms. New innovations such as the Lifestraw and Lifesack are cheap and successfully remove most of the microbes. These are being used widely in countries where clean drinking water is lacking the most. Re-Purify Stationary Water – Do not drink purified water that has been stationary for a very long time without purifying it once more – this minimizes the chance of a recontamination. Keep Containers Clean – All water containers must be washed properly before drinking water to avoid a secondary contamination. The importance of safe drinking for humans cannot be overstated, as water is the main necessity to health. Adults who have been drinking unclean and polluted water for a number of years can experience kidney problems, gastrointestinal disease, blood pressure, and other fatal illnesses. If children are not given sufficient clean water to drink there is a higher chance of stunted mental and physical growth. Clean water is a very basic necessity that must be given utmost importance, especially in countries struggling for basic necessities.   Do your part for the world and make an attempt to donate to charity or somehow help towards providing safe drinking water to the countries where it’s need most. If you are wanting to get involved, look into the initiatives of charities such as Oxfam or Lifestraw to see how you can help them help the worlds population with access to safe water.   ...
